When Safety Training Meets Administrative Apathy

How we adapted our approach to reach 3,500 employees across field and office locations.

A $5 million safety program needed to reach 3,500 employees across 100+ locations, including both field and office staff. During implementation, we discovered administrative employees were less concerned about safety protocols, requiring program adjustments. We needed to communicate desired safety behaviors for different employee groups and supervisors.

DISCOVERY:

The safety program spanned field and office locations with different safety concerns and engagement levels. There was a disconnect between office operations and the field: "Office workers don't think this applies to them." "Field workers are already safety-conscious." The program needed to increase participation while addressing varying levels of safety awareness.

the challenge:

ALIGNMENT:

We didn't come in with one-size-fits-all safety training. Instead, we looked at what different groups needed to hear and how they needed to hear it. Our approach focused on knowledge transfer and the ability to demonstrate safety leader behaviors across diverse workplace environments.

the approach:

Using our Business Alignment Model, we developed an employee training and communications plan that would work for diverse audiences. We aligned the organization around core safety values while recognizing different workplace realities and safety concerns.

Implementation adapted to real-world feedback:

IMPLEMENTATION:

Created training program with Business Alignment Model and organizational learning best practices.

PHASE 1:

Developed "I am a Safety Leader" communication campaign with pocket brochures and reinforcement materials.

PHASE 2:

Adjusted program when administrative employees showed less engagement, ensuring continued effectiveness.

PHASE 3:

THE TRANsFORMATION:

Employees across all locations moved from passive compliance to active safety leadership. The program successfully bridged the gap between field and office safety concerns, creating a unified safety culture while respecting different workplace realities.

MEASURED RESULTS:

114% of goal: Understanding of safety program.

115% of goal: Positive reaction to training.

130% of goal: Training participation.
